Margarita Tsatsa-Nikolovska

Ms.  Nikolovska graduated from the “St. Kiril i Metodije” Law Faculty of the University of Skopje.

After this, she worked in the Skopje County Court as an intern and, after passing the bar exam, she worked as a law clerk.  She was appointed a Judge of the Municipal Court I in Skopje in 1978. She was appointed a Judge of the Skopje Regional Court in 1987. She, subsequently, served as Judge of the Court of Appeals in Skopje. From May 1997 to November 1998, she was the Judge of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Macedonia. She was elected as a Judge of the European Court of Human Rights in respect of the Republic of Macedonia in 1998 and served until 2008.

In 2009, she was elected the Chairman of the Civil Association Institute for Human Rights in the Republic of Macedonia. From 1995, she chaired the Commission for International Relation of the Macedonian Judges Association and she was the representative of the Macedonian Judges Association at the European and International Association of Judges (EAJ or AJ) until 2006. She cooperates closely with a number of international human-rights-oriented organisations. Until 1998, she was an active member of the Macedonia’s Committee for the International Protection of Children. She is also a member of the board of directors of the Macedonian Open Society Foundation and the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights of Macedonia.

She was a lecturer at a number of trainings, seminars and conferences on the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights. She was engaged as a legal expert in the human rights protection field. She is also the author of several publications relating to law, in particular those relating to the human rights and fundamental freedoms.

She served as a Judge of the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina from February 2011 to November 2020. She was elected as Vice-President in June 2018.
