Meeting with senior officials of the Council of Europe

A delegation comprising six ambassadors to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg (representing Ireland, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Norway, and Bosnia and Herzegovina) — Caitríona Doyle, Aloisia Wörgetter, Delphine Delieux, Toma Galija, Vebjørn Heines, and Haris Bašić — together with Claus Neukirch, Director of Programme Coordination of the Council of Europe, Denis Bribosia, Deputy to the Secretary to the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, and Bojana Urumova, Head of Sarajevo Office of the Council of Europe, visited the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina today.

The delegation was received by the President of the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mirsad Ćeman, Vice-President Valerija Galić, and Judge Marin Vukoja, with the associates.

President Ćeman briefed the delegation on the current challenges faced by the Constitutional Court, particularly highlighting the very large number of pending cases within the appellate jurisdiction, resulting from the Constitutional Court’s inability to sit in the Grand Chamber. The President also emphasized the importance of implementing the decisions of the Constitutional Court as an essential instrument for upholding the rule of law, legal certainty, and protecting human rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The discussion also focused on the long-standing and successful cooperation between the Council of Europe and the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as on the continuation of collaboration in implementing Council of Europe projects aimed, inter alia, at improving the consistency of judicial practice, enhancing the capacities of legal professionals in the field of human rights standards, and strengthening the human and technical resources of the Constitutional Court.

The Council of Europe delegation expressed gratitude for the reception, the exchange of views and information, and wished the Constitutional Court continued success in its work.
