Prof. Dr Kasim Begić (1954-2002) former President of the Court On 11 November 2002, in Sarajevo, Prof. Dr Kasim Begić, Judge of the Constitutional Court of BiH of the first term (May 1997 - May 2002) and President of the Court (June 1999 - February 2001), died at the age of 48. During his term as President, Prof. Dr Begić played a significant role in the establishment of the Constitutional Court of BiH as a strong and independent institution. At that time, many aspects of the Court's functioning were marked by his strong contribution: the fact that it is precisely in this period that the Constitutional Court adopted a series of important decisions, both in the domain of abstract review of constitutionality - shaping the constitutional and legal system of the State of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and in the domain of the appellate jurisdiction - where the Court started with a consistent application of the European Convention on Human Rights; the improvement of relations with domestic judiciary - not only through official contacts, but also by initiating and organizing various roundtables gathering representatives of numerous courts from the entire territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina; organizing seminars for local attorneys spreading the awareness of the role and competences of the Constitutional Court of BiH; establishing and developing relations with various international organizations and institutions - among which it is worth mentioning the full membership of the Constitutional Court of BiH to the Conference of European Constitutional Courts and the organization of the international conference in Sarajevo in 2000 with the most eminent European names from the field of constitutional law. In the memory of his colleagues and the whole Secretariat of the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Prof. Dr Kasim Begić shall be remembered as an outstanding person, whose door always remained open for his coworkers.
